Atabey

Taino spirituality teaches that nothing existed in the beginning except Atabey who according to Taino spiritual belief represented a living conscience responsible for materializing both the universe and herself into physical existence. Atabey, according to Taino beliefs, gave birth to the upper celestial realm in an area of space known to Taino as Cauta (the center of the universe) then emerged from the tides of its cosmic waters into our physical reality. Atabey, who had previously only existed in the timeless realm of creativity found herself in a state of loneliness, a spiritual state she had never before experienced as a living conscience from the water realm. Because of this loneliness, Atabey decided to materialize 2 sons into existence, Yocahu and Guacar.

The Birth of Twins

& The duality of nature

Yocahu And Guacar/Jurakan

Yocahu was the primary God of the Taino and is associated with the Yuca and all life sustaining forces within nature. Yocahu is the designer of the sun, moon and physical world (Ayi) and described as the bringer of light (Cuyo), life (Goeiza) and order. Yocahu was responsible for creating the masculine spirit of fertility, Locuo, whom he created in his own image, from the elements. Yocahu later tried to create the first woman with the help of his brother Guacar, but their efforts were unsuccessful, leading to a rift between them. Guacar, who envied his brothers role in creation, felt betrayed by his brother Yocahu, who chose to create the first entity, Locuo, without him. Enraged by his brothers actions Guacar allowed envy and jealousy to consume him filling him with wrath which transformed him into Juracan, the destructive force of storms and the powers behind the winds. Jurakan, according to oral tradition represents the spiritual polar opposite of Yocahu. Guacar represents the spirit of the dead {Ahia- Death) While Yocahu represents the spirit of the living (Goeiza - Life) and the source of the sacred animating force that allows us to be active called Hu in Taino) Guacar allies himself with Coaybay (Spirits of darkness) while Yocahu is known as the designer of the sun, natures source of light (Cuyo) Yocahu brings order, while Guacar believes in chaos.

Locuo, the masculine spirit of fertility looked up and around with admiration, venerating all of Yocahu’s work. one day inspired by the beauty of Yocahu’s creation Locuo decided to create the first man and a woman with whom he could share this beautiful world. Locuo then traveled to a mysterious cave called Siba (Rock) known today as Las Piedras, and reached into his navel to create the first man Guaguyona, and the first woman Yaya, and from them the world was populated.
